Vocal Opening Series

Group workshops oriented specifically towards women and non-binary folks whose experience has been lived in body/voice that has been traditionally hushed in society.

In-person learning opportunity in the new year:

Presented by Laurel Premo, The Vocal Opening Series will be three group workshops oriented specifically towards women and non-binary folks whose experience has been lived in a body/voice that has been traditionally quieted by society. This therapeutic singing work is aimed at unearthing and strengthening the participant’s own authentic voice - the sound of their body, fortifying confidence with using it in any style of communication, and supporting a slow growth towards more powerful local singing traditions that can form bonds in community, gather energy, and nourish those in circle. The workshop series will be focused and inclusive work, starting with very core human sound production and breathwork, and is welcoming to all experience levels.

This series is supported by the Grand Traverse Community Foundation and will be presented at low or no cost to participants on three consecutive Sundays: February 1st, 8th, and 15th from 2:00-3:00 pm. The course is a series, cumulative, with new work in each of the sessions. If you’d like to attend but have a scheduling conflict, you’re welcome to work with me on this same curriculum independently through a private lesson to pick up a session that you missed, or for the whole series at a later date. As an energy exchange, donations at the free will of the participant are welcome at the end of the course if you have been moved by the work, if it has been of service.

This container is a trans and queer safe space. The workshop will be floor sitting or chair sitting (of the participants choice) while doing breathing and sounding exercises, as well as discussion time in that same seated circle format. The work is quite internal, and celebrating of / learning about / collaborating with the body that we are in, and does not include larger physical gestures like movement or dance. There is sensory communication from many different avenues (visual, auditory, touch) and the venue is ADA accessible. Minimal sound reinforcement will be used if necessary dependent on class size and participants needs.

Your participation in this type of strengthening and voice-unlocking work is nourishing both your body as well as much larger bodies that you are a part of. Know that there are so many that support you in this work.

Great thanks to the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation and the Northwoods Music Collaborative for helping make this project possible, and to The Alluvion for supporting this community growth. Come be part of this grand group voice class! Laurel will be teaching grounded exercises and concepts she has learned over a lifetime of study in folk traditions and private work of experimentation in voice and body.
