For 2024’s Beethoven & Banjos festival, The Northwoods Music Collaborative welcomed in Evan Premo (musician), Jan Sandman (painter and sound healer), and Andreas John (filmmaker) and myself for a program entitled 'The Space Between.' Each of the three public events (August 23-25th) had uniquely different tones, with wholly improvised soundings and guided meditations born from the energy of each setting, interspersed with and supporting of a journey presented in film.

This segment features an improvisation between myself and Evan, one singing and one playing the voice’s harmonization. This great act of surrender of each party - myself not controlling what chords I would be collaborating with, what additional notes coming from my actual voice, and my brother not being able to make a note unless I breathed sound through my body - this surrender mimicked the blending and disappearing that was woven across all of the work and themes in the film.

Early in each event, we entered this period of ‘calling in the room.’ Amplifying to the attendants the container in which they sat, built together with all of these lives around them, stories floating in from the community, the spirits outside, the land on which we rested. Building the barn that would hold us through that night’s experience.
